Preparing Your Pup for a Paw-some Daycare Experience

Sending your pup to doggie daycare can be a fantastic way for them to socialize, burn energy, and have a whole lot of fun! However, just like sending a child to their first day of school, a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a smooth and positive experience for both you and your furry companion. Here's a guide to help you get your best friend ready for their daycare adventure with Jackie & Joe’s Pet Care:

1) Ensure basic obedience skills

While doggie daycare isn't boot camp, having a solid foundation in basic obedience commands can significantly ease your dog's transition. Commands like "sit," "stay," "come," and "leave it" can help staff manage interactions and ensure your dog's safety. Practice these regularly in various environments and with distractions.

2) Foster positive social interactions

Doggie daycare is all about interaction! Before enrolling, ensure your dog has had positive experiences with a variety of other dogs – different breeds, sizes, and temperaments. Controlled playdates with vaccinated and well-behaved dogs are a great way to build their social skills and confidence, especially when they are young. Expose them to many different sounds and smells, too, that they might encounter at daycare.

3) Keep them up-to-date on vaccinations

This is non-negotiable! Reputable doggie daycares, such as Jackie & Joe’s Pet Care, will require proof of up-to-date vaccinations, including rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella (kennel cough). This protects all the dogs in their care. Ensure your dog is also in good overall health and free from any contagious illnesses or parasites. A healthy dog is a happy dog!

4) Familiarize them with crates

Many doggie daycares, including ours, use crates for rest periods or short timeouts. If your dog isn't already crate-trained, start introducing them to a crate in a positive way. Make it a comfortable den with treats and toys. This will make their time in a crate at daycare much less stressful.

5) Be patient

Just like any new experience, it might take your dog a little time to adjust to doggie daycare. Don't be discouraged if they seem tired or unsure after their first visit. With consistent positive experiences, most dogs learn to love their daycare days!

By taking these steps to prepare your dog, you're setting them up for a successful and enjoyable experience at doggie daycare – a place where they can socialize, play, and have a paw-some time! And remember: be open and honest with the daycare staff about your dog's personality, any anxieties, fears, or specific needs they might have! This includes their play style, any sensitivities to certain types of dogs, or any medical conditions. The more information they have, the better they can care for your pup.
